The entire Best Behavior Series is awesome. My son needed "Teeth Are Not For Biting" and This I bought this for my daughter. It's a different, but effective way for a parent to discourage negative behavior.
I purchased two copies of Hands Are Not for Hitting for toddler cousins in our family who have discovered that they can become the center of attention when they start hitting people -- not to mention each other when the mommies get them together. In essence, this entire Best Behavior Series is absolute perfection. The books say just enough on the subject matter to get through to a child, but gives some fun-to-repeat lessons that can be easily memorized. If your toddler has started to hit (as they all do) you really should buy this book. For a few dollars, you can end the trouble before it become an awful habit.
My son recently got into the habit of hitting other kids during play groups so I was frantically trying to find books that reinforced the fact that it isn't nice/kind to hit other kids. My 2.5 year old son loves this book and hasn't hit another child since reading this book on a regular basis. Great reinforcement of good manners/good habits.
This book is good for reading to your child when he/she starts to hit. I bought it for that reason and started reading it to my son whenever he would hit one of us. It seemed to work because he's not hitting anymore. However, I wish it would have said "Hands are not for hitting, they're for." on every page instead of just some pages.
This book was recommended by a friend for our 2 year old who was hitting. He needs reminders every once in awhile, we just say, "Hands are not for hitting," and he doesn't hit. He stopped after the first time we read it. It was like a lightbulb came on in his head. Love this book. "Feet Are Not for Kicking," is also wonderful.
